The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is the rate at which red blood cells get settled at the bottom of a tube over a period of 1 hour. Under normal conditions, erythrocytes (RBCs) drop slowly, leaving little clear plasma. Increased amounts of abnormal proteins and other proteins such as fibrinogen and immunoglobulins in the blood, which are increased due to inflammation, cause red blood cells to drop more rapidly, increasing the ESR.

Beaconic ESR 20 measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle at the bottom of a test tube containing a blood sample over a period of 30 minutes. It has 20 wells to test 20 blood samples simultaneously.

It uses the principle of Optical Photometry, in which an optical bench of 20 emitter-detector pairs scans the blood samples and detects the transition layer of plasma, thereby evaluating the effective height of the plasma column. The 60th-minute data is then predicted in 30 minutes by using an advanced prediction algorithm.

It quickly measures and gives the ESR value in 30 minutes, providing a prediction of the 1-hour result.
